Developmental Delays: When to Call a Doctor
Cognitive Skills
Cognitive skills are mental skills used in the process of acquiring knowledge; these include reasoning, perception, and intuition. For example, reading and writing rely on a specific set of cognitive skills such as attention, memory, symbolic thinking, and self-regulation.
Between 2 to 5, children should be able to progress from simple to more complex understanding of time, numbers, counting and colors. They should be able to follow increasingly detailed commands. At this age, play also gradually becomes more inventive and richly imaginative. By age 5, a child’s vocabulary would have grown to around 2,070 words and can tell longer stories. They begin to question the meaning of words and understand the difference between what’s real and what’s not. They reason, based on their experiences.
At age 7, children can reason logically and organize their thoughts. They are incapable of abstract reasoning yet, but start to lose their egocentric thinking pattern at this age. They can now do multiple tasks, for example arithmetic—encourage this by setting simple calculations, and choosing games and cards that encourage numerical awareness.
Feeding the mind also means feeding their body. It is said that the brain is a very hungry organ—the first of the body’s organs to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. Growing bodies need many types of nutrients—such as Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, Choline, B-vitamins, protein, Vitamin D and iron are essential brain building must-haves!
